Basic functions of a packaging It can be summarized as Containing, Protecting/Preserving, Carrying, Giving Information/Selling. Packages are classified as follows according to their usage areas; Primary packaging or sales packaging - is the packaging that surrounds the product as it is sold to the final consumer. It includes packaging that is in direct contact with the product and other packaging components needed to complete the sales unit (e.g. cap and label). Secondary packaging or group packaging – packaging used to compile sales units for easy transport applications in the sales environment. This can be done by grouping products for sale to the consumer (eg shrink film and corrugated cardboard box).
